SETTING UP A SCORING TABLE

SETTING UP A SCORING TABLE

When working at the Scoring Table: Be ready and setting at the table at least fifteen minutes before the start of the event. A single table needs 1 announcer, plus:

#1 scorer uses announcer’s copy of the divers’ sheet to record the scores from the 5 judges, eliminate the highest and lowest scores and sum the remainder to obtain the “net award”. For example: the awards are 5’, 5, 5’, 5’, 5, eliminating the highest (5’) and lowest (5) leaves 5’, 5’, 5 = 16, which is the “net award.” The sheet is then handed to worker #2.

#2 master scorer uses a pad of ruled paper to record the scores from the 5 judges, eliminate the highest and lowest scores and sum the remainder to obtain the “net award” which is verified with that from the scorer’s sheet when handed to the master-scorer. Differences should be resolved immediately. When the net awards match, the scorer’s sheet is handed to worker #3.

#3 calculator and adder uses the DD slide rule calculator to multiply the “net award” by the DD of that particular dive and record the “award” in the appropriate column on the sheet. If the scores given above were earned on a forward dive from 3 meter, where the DD is a 1.6, the “award” is 16 x 1.6 = 25.60. In the 1st round of dives, worker #3 would then hand the sheet to worker #4. Beginning in the 2nd round, worker #3 adds these “awards” as they are calculated (this job can be split among 2 people if you have enough workers.) The scorers’ sheet is handed to worker #4.

#4 checker reviews the above steps, checking the multiplication and addition. This person collects the divers’ sheets in order until the announcer had only 2 or 3 left, at which time the sheets are returned for continuity. During the final round of dives, or at that point in mid-event when a “cut” will be used, worker #4 can put the sheets in score order, rather than keeping them in diving order. To implement a “cut” to 12 divers in a field of 18, pull the 6 lowest-scoring divers’ sheets (and record them as placing 13th-18th). The top 12 score sheets would be replaced in diving order and the event resumed.

Notes: *At small meets with few workers, omit the master-scorer job; if you can’t get 5 judges, just use 3 (sum all 3 scores for the net award).**You can replace the master-scorer’s paper with a duplicate copy of the divers’ sheets. Announcer and scorer would use one set of sheets while workers #2, 3 and 4 use the other.
