Q
Dear Matt I'm a High School diver from
Fort Lee NJ. My problem is when I do a back press my feet
leave the board before I jump up. How can I keep my feet
on the board while doing a back press.

Dear Cara,
Here are a few helpful hints I try to give
my divers when they tend to lose their balance on back take
offs and/or when they crow hop.

First, I recommend
a somewhat hollow body stance.
Second, heels
touching each other and front part of feet separated by
approximately two inches while readied for a back press.
Third, make
1-3 ankle primes to prime board, keeping primes at a pace
that allows consistent balance.
Too fast can throw your balance off.
Then as you prime the board, raise your arms at a
balanced pace to a "Y" position, but not touching
your ears.

As you prime the board and raise your arms,
keep a somewhat hollowed body position and focus on your
hips staying centered. Meaning, try to keep your hips hollow.
After final prime and arm raise, then allow
your body weight to begin to drop into the board on top
of the front of your feet, allowing some board depression
and knee bend before swinging arms. Many divers lose balance and/or crow hop when
they prime the board to fast, don't have a hollowed body
line, and don't keep hips hollowed, and lastly when their
arms too early.
Cara, I hope this information is helpful. Good luck to you and may you have ksplashless
entries.
