The Amsterdam Cup
The DE Dolfijn’  Cup
June 1-3 , 2001

HIGHLIGHTS

Day One:  The largest Team turnout at the Amsterdam Cup with 26 teams participating and 175 divers from all over Europe and the US. Despite travelling a great distance and staring their warm-ups at 3:00 a.m.US  time, the American athletes were sharp, alert and ready to perform!  The new pool in Amsterdam, only 8 weeks old, is a wonderful facility with 4 pools and a diving well with a fantastic indoor tower.

DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS

On the first day of competition the Americans exceeded their expectations by coming form behind and  performing their dives in ways they   never believed could be completed with the small amount of preparation and sleep they had .  The top dive of the day was performed by Trisha Tumlinson.  She performed a 105B for straight 8’s followed by 7.5 and 8’s reverse two and a half tuck.!!!  Superb diving!!  The younger divers on the All-star team came through as well, achieving a 1st on Group C girls tower (Emily Huth), 2nd and 3rd on Group C boys tower (JJ Kinzbach and Harry Jones),  Group A girls 3M  1st and 3rd (Trisha Tumlinson, and Shaina Meland), Group A boys 1st and 2nd (Adam Peterson and Sal Vilardo), and Women’s Open 3M another 1st by Trisha Tumlinson,

It was quite exciting to see the Polish Olympian,  perform in the completion winning the Men’s Open event.  The calibre of the competition was of the highest quality and gave our athletes a taste of what international competition is all about.

During their off periods from the events, the divers all took side trips into downtown Amsterdam and were awed by it’s history and incredible architecture.  They especially enjoyed the performers at town square and the Wax Museum.  They quickly made bets as to who would be carried off by the pigeons they decided to befriend, but we made it back to home base without losing any divers.  This was accomplished despite Eric Elliot leading the way. Just ask the divers who followed him to the hotel on the first night.  A  ten minute trip that turned into 3 hours!!!

DAY TWO AND THE HIGHLIGHTS

Early Day 2 dawned to bring the Team even more trophies.  These trophies are intricately etched with a diver.  Truly an award the athletes will forever treasure!!

Group C Boys 3M grabbed a 2nd and a tie for 3rd place (Harry Jones and JJ Kinzbach/Chris Carter).

One of the closest competitions of the day, Girls C 1M Hungarian diver Veronika Gal and Znnika van der Zouwen were only separated by less than half of a point.  An extremely strong Men’s 1M Open contest showed Christioan Conventz of Aachen beat out Olympian Andrzej Kozdranski of the Polish National Team and Salvador Vilardo of the USA National Team placing 5th.  Women’s Open 3M – TrishaTumlinson of the United States All Stars continued to dominate the women’s completion in spite of great performances by Polish diver Maria Lund, Bianca van Os-Ban of the Netherlands and Magdalene Ciesla of Sweden.

In the boys A 1m, the USA All-stars really had an opportunity to show the depth of their men’s team taking five of the top nine slots, with Adam Peterson putting in his best performance ever closely followed by Salvador Vilardo

Trisha Tumlinson of the USA All Stars started her day the same way she finished it, in first place, winning the women’s 1M by five points over the Polish National Champion, Magdalena Ciesla.  Shaina Meland of the USA All Stars finished 3rd, just ahead of teammate Lindsey Wiegle, and finishing 5th and 6th were the Netherlands National Team members.

Trisha trailed after the 1st seven dives and took the lead with the 8th and 9th dive scoring 48.10 points on her last dive to win the event.

In the Men’s A 3m Dariusz Gorniak of Poland narrowly beat out his teammate Grzegorz Musialek by exactly 1 point!  The National Team of Sweden’s Magnus Frick took 3rd place.  Salvador Vilardo was 4th for the US All Stars, followed by Kenny Jenkins, Adam Peterson and Mitch Richardson.

Women’s Open 1M --- Trisha Tumlinson of the USA All Stars continued her dominance placing ahead of Sabine Knoers of the Netherlands National Team, missing second by only 1 point was Lindsey Wiegle of the USA All Stars. Lindsey did an incredible job considering that she is a Women’s Fina A age group and scoring an average of 6 or better on all of her dives in a tightly scored meet.  She finished her event with a 5225D scoring over 47 points.

Men’s 3M Open—Won by Polish Olympic team member Andrzej Kozdranski who led the group by over 30 points. Finishing 2nd was Vilmar Aarding of the Netherlands National Team. Kenny Jenkins of the USA All Stars putting in his personal best meet scoring well over 50 points on 5 of 6 his dives for a finish of 3rd place leading all All Stars on that event. Adam Peterson of the All Stars had the second highest scoring dive of the meet which was a 405B scoring over 60 points.

Women’s B Platform—Kristin Caiazzo of the US All Stars walked away with her first international victory, beating out Moique van de Hoef of AZ and PC of the Netherlands.  Placing 3rd was Julie van Wees also of  AZ and PC of the Netherlands.

Men’s Open Synchronized 3M--  The team of Vilmar Aarding/Levy Rosalina of the Netherlands put on a crowd pleasing performance and handily winning the competition 12 points over the East West All Star Team of Mitch Richardson/Sal Vilardo. Finishing 6th was Harry Jones/Brandon Kolar of the US All Stars.  When asked to comment on their placing Harry said “Brandon was too tall for the team” and Brandon said “Harry needs to jump higher”.  They both attributed the height difference for their failure to capture first place.

Women’s Synchronized Open 3M--  The well rehearsed team of Bianca van So-Ban and Tessa den Oudsten of the Netherlands captured 1st place over Marie Damborska/Dora Buresova of the Czech Republic.  Dora celebrated her 17th birthday with the 2nd place finish 4 points ahead of the second Netherlands team. Rounding out the field was the look-alike team from the US Allstars of Alicia Bradley/Miranda Maas.

Girls C 1M—Veronika Gal won Hungary’s first 1st place of the competition, beating by less than ½ point Annika van der Zouwen of the Netherlands.

Boys C 3M—In a highly competitive Boys C group Philipp Beceker of SV Neptun Aachan winning the event with a score of 230.6 followed by Harry Jones of East West All Stars and tying for 3rd place JJ Kinzbach/Chris Carter of the All Stars.

Boys C 1M—Phillip Beceker of Aachen winning his 2nd of 3 events, placing 2nd was Johan Hasselnook of the Netherlands National Team.  Then in an extremely hard fought battle for 3rd place was JJ Kinzbach of the US All Stars, followed closely by Philipp Pelzer of Aachen with a score of 185 and Jonathan Fennelly of the All Stars with 182 points.

Women’s B 1M—The Croatian National Team picks up their first victory with Natasa Kolic scoring 288 points, followed by Raisa Geurtsen of the Netherlands, and with a strong performance, finishing 3rd, Kristin Caiazzo of the US All Stars.

Women’s Open Tower--  The DUI of Germany picked up their first champion with Olivia Maresch winning the event with a score of 281.45 points.
