Clark Falkenstein,
48 years old,long-time coach of New Canaan's Triple
Lindy Divers age group team died from cancer on August
31, 2000. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill (''73),
he went to Clemson on a full scholarship for graduate
school (MBA) in return for his coaching their diving
team... graduated in 1980. Clark accomplished a great
deal in years dedicated to age group coaching - with
several Age Group National Champions and many YMCA National
Championship teams. Clark also coached an NCAA Division
III National Champion from Manhattanville College. Despite
his great success as a coach, he was present at all
the local meets helping to support local teams throughout
the northeast. Clark was unique for thinking out of
the box. He ran an annual ski-dive meet where the team
totals where based on a combination of diving and ski
racing scores, and he ran the first meet with on-line
registration. At last year's Junior Nationals in Orlando,
a party was held in his honor to acknowledge the first
year Clark did not have a diver at Nationals in 16 years!
Clark was much more than a coach - He was a good friend
to all of us on the east coast and in the diving community
nationwide. Clark leaves his wife, Maria Coomaraswamy,
coach at Union College in Schenectady, New York. Service
on Tuesday (7 p.m.) will be at St. Anthony's R.C. Church
331 Seward Place Schenectady, NY 12305 (tel: 518-374-4591).
Maria and Clark set up a fund for "Disadvantaged Younger
Divers" and have asked for contributions to that
instead of flowers. Disadvantaged Younger Divers c/o
