Quintin
Harris, a member of Port City Diving, was awarded a $1500.00
grant from the Henry
Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Foundation.
This non-profit foundation awards scholarships to minority
students from ages 9 to 12 years to help them to start chasing
their dreams. Applicants, drawn from the local Boys and Girls
Clubs, were chosen based on talent, dedication shown through
their writing, and a plan of action to acheive a set of goals
within the next year.
Although the
program has been conducted in Milwakee, Wisconsin, and
Atlanta, Georgia, This is the first group of students to receive
the award in Mobile.. Baseball Hall of Famer and native Mobilian
Hank Aaron was on hand with his wife Billie to hand out awards
and Atlanta Braves bags to the recipients.
Mrs. Aaron spoke briefly about why this program is important.
Any
child can become a nobody, but any child can become somebody,
with the help of anybody.
Quintins plans for the grant? He says his first priority
it to travel to the University of Gorgia for diving camp this
summer and then participate in as many Junior Olympic meets
as possible. Maybe even Zones and Nationals. After that,
more training in the pool and on the trampoline.
Port
City Diving would like to thank the following organizations
for their support of Quintin Harris and the sport of diving.
Mr. and Mrs. Henry Aaron, The Henry "Hank" Aaron
"Chasing the Dream" Foundation, the Mobile Optimist
Club and the Michigan Ave. Boys and Girls Club in Mobile,
Alabama.
Hank
Aaron Chasing The Dream Foundation
The Hank Aaron Chasing
the Dream Foundation provides financial assistance to underprivileged
youths seeking to better themselves through education. Presentations
are made annually at a special ceremony featuring Hank Aaron.
Locally, funds for the foundation come from the Hank Aaron
Golf Tournament held each summer in the Milwaukee area. The
Chasing the Dream Foundation has its roots in Milwaukee from
the end of Aaron's playing career in 1976. It is administered
from Atlanta, Hank's current home, with proceeds targeted
toward youths in Atlanta and Milwaukee.
