McCORMICK TAKES SECOND GOLD AT PAN AMS

August 11, 2001

Mexico City, Mexico – Riley McCormick of Victoria, BC, took his second gold medal yesterday at the Pan Am Junior Championships in Mexico City, Mexico.

McCormick won gold in the boys group D 3M springboard event, scoring 198.95. McCormick also took gold on Wednesday in the 1M event.

"I wasn't happy with my fourth dive," said McCormick. "But I'm pleased with how I recovered and I put in my last dive better than the ones in practice."

Steven Cole, also of Victoria, BC, came in 5th with 150.70 and Eric MacDonald of Vancouver, BC, finished 7th with 142.65.

"The boys each missed the entry on a dive or two, but all of the small details that we've been working on were really good," said Tommy McLeod, one of the Canadian coaches in Mexico with the team. "It's the small details that will make them better divers in the future."

The Pan Am Junior Diving Championships are divided into four age groups. Group A comprises the eldest group of divers. They are born in 1983,1984 or 1985. The divers born in 1986 or 1987 are classified as Group B. Group C has those born in 1988 and 1989 and finally Group D has those divers born in 1990 or later.

Delphine Lachapelle and Sabrina Beaupre, both of Montreal, QC, also took their second medals of the meet yesterday. Lachapelle won silver in the girls group D 1M springboard event yesterday with a score of 165.50. Lachapelle took a gold on Wednesday in the 3M event. Beaupre, who took silver on Wednesday in the 3M event, won a bronze yesterday with 159.20 in the 1M event.

"I am happy with my event," said Beaupre. "I missed one dive, but I did the best reverse 1 ½ of my life!"

Lena Halliwell of Pointe Claire, QC, finished 5th with 150.45 in the event.

Marianne Allaire-Morin of Montreal, QC, took a gold medal in the girls group A 1M springboard event. This is Allaire-Morin's second medal of the meet. She won a bronze in the 3M event on Thursday.

"Normally, there's one dive that I miss," said Allaire-Morin, who scored 377.20. "But today I was very consistent."

Kelsey Patterson of Edmonton, AB, finished in 7th place with 332.35 and Laura Knowles of Nepean, ON came in 10th, with 303.80.

"I wasn't really expecting much on 1M," said Knowles. "I'll count this as a learning experience."
