It took several months
of interviewing at different schools before I was able to come up
with a good set of questions. These questions may help you in your
interviews and campus visits.
20 questions to ask
a college coach:
1.) How many divers
do you have?
2.) How many divers
are you looking for?
3.) How long have you
been coaching there?
4.) What are your plans
for the future?
5.) What kind of training
do you do outside of the pool? (Running, weight training, etc.)
6.) Do you go on training
trips? Are the trips funded?
7.) Do you practice
tower?
8.) How often do you
practice? (Hours per week)
9.) Does the diving
team practice with the swim team? Do they get along?
10.) When are your meets?
i.e.: would I be missing class to dive?
11.) How do your divers
manage diving and school?
12.) What happens if
a diver is in trouble academically?
13.) Are there tutors
available to the athletes?
14.) Do you have scholarship
available?
15.) Would I be considered
for it?
16.) When do you make
your decision?
17.) Is it worthwhile
for me to apply early?
18.) What are the chances
that I would be able to come here?
19.) Will being a diver
help me to get in?
20.) Are there other
divers coming next year?
Dos:
-Say that you want to
be on a team where you can make a meaningful contribution.
-Have some idea of which
academic areas interest you.
-Ask about some part
of the curriculum.
Example: I always asked
about summer abroad. I thought about junior year abroad, but I
didnt want to miss any of the season.
Donts:
-Boring or
I dont know
-Dont show up for
a recruiting trip at Boston College wearing Notre Dame clothing.
Note:
-If you feel awkward
talking to coaches at first, dont worry. It gets easier.
-If they ask, tell them
the other schools you are looking at. Even if you dont tell
them, chances are they will find out anyway.
-When you accept at a
College, tell the other coaches yourself. Better they find out
from you than from someone else. You should do this either in person
or over the phone.
-Be sincere. If you
dont intend on applying to the school, dont waste your
time or the coaches time.
-A question my age group
coach asked me was "If you broke your leg and couldn't dive
anymore, would you still want to be at that school?"
