"First
and foremost, (the Quakertown Community School District
doesn't) have a pool, and second, the pool we use at the
Upper Bucks YMCA doesn't have a diving well."
Those are the kind of things that would stop some less
dedicated athletes dead in their tracks - but not Davis.
The Energizer Bunny, Timex watches, reruns of "Seinfeld"
- things that just keep going on and on and on. Add Horlick
High School graduate Bryan Dykstra to
the list of perpetual motion machines. As a freshman diver
of the UW-Eau Claire swim team, Dykstra has a unique style
of staying in shape: Never sit still for a second.
Miss
Janie Moss passed away on Sunday December 26th
Miss
Janie has been extremely influential in the sport
of diving as a supporter, administrator, and as US Diving
registration chairperson for decades. Her personality
and charm has extended far beyond the state boundaries
of Georgia, and she has touched many peoples' lives among
the diving community. Miss Janie had an endearing presence
which made many of us feel as though she was the "mother"
or "grandmother" of diving in the South. Up
until the time of her death, she would be diligently working
on all of the diving association business, and would expect
phone calls during all diving events (whether they were
junior, senior, high school or college) in order be informed
of how the divers were doing. Her southern charm, wit,
bright smile, and sincere concern for all involved in
our sport will be greatly missed.
June 2004 was
a thrilling month in the Kimberley with
apparently sane, tanned and toned men hurling themselves
off huge cliffs into some of the regions breathtaking
gorges. Some of the world's leaders in the sport
of cliff diving have been touring the Kimberley's most
spectacular gorges in pursuit of the ultimate dive.
Cristi
Lindsey can't wait for the holiday break to be
over. .. -- but the University of North Dakota diver wants
to get back to the water. And no one can blame her for
the start she's off to this season..."Cristi's always
been a good competitor," UND diving coach Brian
Strom said. "She's at the point now where
she doesn't really need to learn anything, she just has
to perfect ..
ROCKFORD -- Rockford Guilford freshman
Andrew Muzzarelli said the hardest thing
about learning to dive is adapting to the cold.....Transitioning
from tumbling to diving is nothing newto the diving community.
Local diving coach Ron Merriott competed
on the trampoline when he was young and went on to earn
a bronze medal in diving in the 1984 Olympics.
For China's diving team, nothing speaks
louder of their "dream team" aura than the results
during the Athens Olympics."Diving in other parts
of the world is developing really fast and China can no
longer enjoy comfortable wins in competitions," Zhou
said.
If
divers Natalie Thomas and Liza
Marianni didn't get along, it wouldn't be considered
a major surprise. After all, they are arch-rivals.
Last season, at the state championship meet, Thomas, of
Cherokee, took the crown. The year before, the title belonged
to Marianni, of Cherry Hill West.....Four afternoons a
week, the girls practice at Drexel University in Philadelphia
with the Spinner diving team. It's a ritual they have
followed for the last 10 years under coach Larry
May.
Adamstown
diver Matthew Helm relentlessly seeks
perfection. He has been searching for the
elusive perfect 10 since he was five years old.
While some say the 24 year old diver found it at the Athens
Olympics earlier this year when he scored four perfect
10s (a total score of 99.96) in the men's 10m platform
to take the silver medal, Matthew says he could have done
better.
Aberdeen's Bon Accord Baths will

ROBERT
Newbery took a back seat on the publicity wagon
to his wife Chantelle in 2004 after the
fellow diver won an Olympic gold medal in the women's
10m competition in Athens.....He is one of 10 finalists
who will vie for the honour of being named SA's premier
athlete at a ceremony at the National Wine Centre on February
11.
Kelly Walsh diver Nick Stone
has yet to find a true rival on the springboard, so his
arch-nemesis is a dive: the back 1.5 pike...At last year's
state swimming and diving meet, Stone
needed 23 points on the last dive to win. He chose the
back 1.5 pike, a dive with a high amount of difficulty
but one Stone was confident he could execute. He didn't.
Laramie's Brock Weitzal won the closest
diving competition in state finals history by 0.65 points....."In
practice, I keep nailing that dive," Stone said.
"Now it's just, 'do it right, stop messing
around.'
Now, many athletes experience depression
after a huge Olympic win. After all, from the time they
were children, they were completely immersed in their
particular event. They were conditioned to shoot for the
top. But no one teaches them what to do once they get
there....Pat McCormick found a unique
way to combat these post-Olympic blues by giving something
back. This winner decided to help out kids who'd been
labeled losers.
Gao Min, who retired 12 years ago as the greatest female
springboard diver in the history of the sport, will be
a special guest of the organizing committee trying to
bring the 2012 Summer Olympics to New York City
The increased funding will be used to strengthen the
grass roots of sport – in particular school and
community sport – and will help nurture a new generation
of sporting champions ahead of the Beijing Olympics in
2008.
Admiral
Farragut senior Austin Hampton had been
a high school All-American since he was a freshman yet
seemed to be diving in obscurity...Hampton completed a
flawless senior season by winning the Class A title, fending
off a seventh-grader, Boca Raton St. Andrew's Cameron
Dehn, at the (Fla.) state meet...."I
made sure my coach, Tony, really critiqued
me.
Derek Beaumont: Coached and judged diving at the Commonwealths,

champion for 46 successive years!
PETALING

a pool of promising young divers, Malaysia have been picked
to host the next World Junior Championships in 2006.
The pair
returned knowing how much celebrity appeal they have and
a much more colorful world outside of the diving pool....The
Chinese diving team maintains a "don't ask, don't
tell" policy on romance but media and businessmen
would rather label them as a pair of lovers as they ...
The possible scrapping of plans to build two 50-meter
swimming pools, a diving platform and 4,000-seat grandstand
did not sit well with the nonprofit Foundation for Mesa
Parks and Recreation and the Mesa Convention and Visitors
Bureau.
"Diving

along."
