WHITTIER - What difference does a year make? For Jonathan Perez, all the difference in the world. There was no sophomore jinx for the Whittier High School diver, who followed up last season's fourth-place finish by winning the CIF-Southern Section Division III title early last month. For his efforts, Perez is the Daily News boys Swimmer of the Year.
An important factor in many of these changes is the inability of many of our coaches to lead a balanced and healthy life. Some coaches have told us that it becomes a choice between a marriage and coaching. Other coaches have said that they cannot tolerate the time away from their children. Finally, some coaches have stopped coaching because the constant performance stress was changing them in way they did not like.

The Mentos® Splashdiving World Championship will take place on 28th and 29th July at the Kaifu-Bad pool in Hamburg, Germany. Splashdiving is the new freestyle bombing water sport which originated in Germany. Unlike springboard diving and high diving, the objective when diving is to displace as much water as possible with as much noise as possible. So far, 13 official dives have been developed, which in competitions are performed from the 10-metre board. All the dives are shown at www.splashdiving.com.
Kris Holmquist is the new diving coach and is looking forward to lots of youngsters who would like to learn how to dive....Diving is an action - reaction sport and great for cross training. FORT LAUDERDALE — Before each dive off the 3-meter springboard, Boca Raton's Jevon Tarantino turns his back to the pool so he can't see what the diver before him does. Two years ago, Tarantino momentarily turned his back on the sport he had excelled at since childhood.

GREGORY-PORTLAND - The Gregory-Portland school district has settled a discrimination lawsuit with the parents of a state champion diver. As part of the settlement, the parents got nearly $120,000 for legal fees, but they said they wanted fair play, not a payday.
